Absolutely everything you post (music, photos, words) on Myspace, for as long as it remains on your profile, is co-owned by Rupert Murdoch and his empire (the nice people who own Fox News). I don’t mean this in some sort of figurative way—the co-ownership is clearly documented in Myspace’s Terms. You implicitly give Rupert, “The non-exclusive, fully paid, worldwide license to use, publicly perform and display [your intellectual property] on the Website.”
Although I made my own account a few months ago, I have become increasingly alarmed by the fact that more and more of my peers are using Myspace as their sole means of electronic communication. I thought ill of Myspace, even before Rupert had purchased it. The simple fact that Myspace is such a proprietary medium of communication is what initially bothered me. In addition to that, now those asshats at Fox have unfettered access to who we know, what we’re excited about, and a list of everything we like and dislike—we’re basically building a giamungous web of consumer data while we look at flash advertisements and post cute comments on each other’s profiles.
So next time you’re on Myspace, you might consider posting a thank you to Rupert for giving us such a unique and fun place to play. Just make sure your comment isn’t, “offensive or illegal,” because, “MySpace.com reserves the right… in its sole discretion [to take action] against anyone who violates this provision, including without limitation, removing the offending communication from the Service and terminating the membership of such violators.” In layperson’s terms, all your communication belongs to Fox.
